One of the most common questions we hear at the shop is “How often should I be getting a haircut?” The honest answer: it depends entirely on your style, hair type, and how put-together you want to look. Here's a straightforward breakdown.
By Hairstyle
Fades and Skin Fades
Every 2–3 weeks. Fades are high-maintenance by nature. The sharp gradient grows out quickly, and within three weeks, that crisp line starts to blur. If a clean fade is your look, budget for frequent visits.
Crew Cuts and Short Styles
Every 3–4 weeks. Crew cuts and similar short styles maintain their shape reasonably well but start looking shaggy around the one-month mark.
Medium Length Styles
Every 4–6 weeks. Styles like the side part or textured crop have more forgiveness as they grow. You'll notice it needs attention when it starts losing its shape or becoming hard to style.
Longer Styles
Every 6–8 weeks. Even long hair needs regular trims to remove split ends, maintain shape, and keep the style looking intentional rather than neglected.
By Hair Type
- Thick hair: Grows quickly and gets heavy fast. Lean toward more frequent cuts
- Thin hair: Can go slightly longer between cuts, but precision is important to maintain volume
- Curly hair: Appears to grow slower (it's shrinking as it curls). Cuts every 6–8 weeks often suffice
- Coarse/textured hair: Benefits from regular shaping to maintain clean lines
Signs You're Overdue
You definitely need a cut if your hair takes significantly longer to style in the morning, your fade has lost all definition, hair starts curling over your ears or collar when it shouldn't, you find yourself constantly pushing hair out of your eyes, or friends start asking if you're growing your hair out (and you're not).
Budgeting for Haircuts
Think of haircuts as a regular expense, not an occasional splurge. If you get a cut every 3 weeks, that's roughly 17 cuts per year. Factor this into your budget and you'll never have to choose between looking sharp and paying bills. Proper at-home maintenance helps stretch the time between visits.
Beard Maintenance Schedule
Don't forget your facial hair. Beard trims should happen every 1–2 weeks for clean lines, with a fuller shaping service every 3–4 weeks. Read our beard grooming guide for more details.
